SoH Fleet: The Lifespan of Electric Bus Batteries

The SoH Fleet project, led by ACTIA Automotive (France), in collaboration with CARNET (Spain), Keolis Blois (France) and TMB (Spain), is supported by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. It aims to transform the management of electric bus fleets in Europe by developing a solution that will allow operators to better understand and optimize battery aging using the State of Health (SoH) parameter.

A COLLABORATIVE PROJECT TOWARDS AN OPEN ACCESS TO ELECTRICAL VEHICLE DATA

The SoH Fleet project is based on a collaboration between key players in mobility and technological innovation:

ACTIA Automotive: As a major player in IoT solutions for the Urban Mobility market, leverages its expertise in designing intelligent and interoperable systems. The company will develop an AI based solution providing an accurate estimation of the SoH in real time.

CARNET (Cooperative Automotive Research Network): CARNET is an open hub based in Barcelona, specializing in research and innovation in urban mobility and automotive technology. It will lead to the evaluation and optimization of pilot projects, ensuring relevant and usable results.

Two European cities will be part of the project through their Public Transportation Operators (PTOs), to test and demonstrate the effectiveness of the solution. These will be:

TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona): Being the main public transport operator in Barcelona, TMB brings its expertise in large-scale fleet management. They will participate in the validation of the solution on a fleet of 10 electrical buses in a dense and complex urban environment.

Keolis Blois: In charge of the operation and maintenance of the AZALYS network in Blois, Keolis is testing the solution in an environment representative of small urban fleets. The SoH Fleet solution will be deployed on 6 electrical buses in this medium-sized city, in order to measure the impact in a different context.

At the end, SOH Fleet project will allow PTOs to monitor the aging of their electrical batteries through the establishment of an easy to access, reliable and cost-efficient way of retrieving the necessary in-vehicle data to calculate the State of the Health of batteries.

SoH Fleet Project for Sustainable Mobility

By optimizing the monitoring of battery degradation, the SoH Fleet project aims to improve the operational efficiency of public transport. The project is based on identifying the main factors of energy consumption and optimizing the use of batteries with the stated objective of:

  • A 20% reduction in vehicle maintenance costs
  • A 20% extension of battery life

By facilitating the electrification of public transport and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, SoH Fleet is actively participating in the transition to more sustainable and efficient urban mobility. The project is thus fully in line with the decarbonization objectives of the transport sector and with the EIT Urban Mobility Strategic Agenda 2021 – 2027.

At the end of the project, the SoH Fleet technology will have evolved from a technological maturity level of TRL7 to TRL9, meaning it will have reached a level of industrialization allowing full integration and large-scale marketing.

With technology that will soon mature, SoH Fleet will become a key solution to improve the operational efficiency of electric fleets and accelerate the transition to more sustainable mobility.
